Navy Pilots Need Audio Assist to Shoot Down Enemy

Whenever General Yeager knew there were Navy pilots in the audience, he’d razz them good-naturedly as only General Yeager could and get away with it.

He’d talk about the new jets – how much easier they are to shoot down the enemy, then when he flew the P-51 in World War II.

In P-51s, you had virtually no help in aiming, it was all the pilot and hand eye coordination – certainly no computer assist.

In the newer jets, the computer locks on the target, shows it on the screen in front of the pilot and the enhanced screen starts flashing “SHOOT”.

And for Navy pilots – you know, they can’t read – so to help them, the computer would transmit aloud  in their headsets: “SHOOT!”

Heh heh. Then, he would give his beautiful mischievous smile.

Even the Navy pilots would laugh.
